Call of Duty Ghosts: What we know so far

Update (May 1): Activision have officially announced that Call of Duty: Ghosts will be released on November 5 for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. The publisher says that the game will feature "a riveting all-new gameplay experience built on an entirely new story, setting and cast of characters, all powered by a new, next generation Call of Duty engine that redefines the series for the next generation."

The following teaser trailer was also released to accompany the announcement:

Original story: The official reveal is fast approaching for the newest entry in the hugely-successful Call of Duty series, Ghosts, so we ask ourselves the most important question of all: what exactly will it be like? More specifically, will the multiplayer be the same as the previous titles? You know; run, shoot, drop shot, quick scope? Or will it provide us with something new?

A fresh take on Activision’s shooter franchise would be nice – for example, Treyarch did a brilliant job in taking that risk by teleporting gamers to the year 2025 in Black Ops II – but will Infinity Ward be able to surprise us all? Or will it just be a re-hash of Modern Warfare 3 with very little new content?

One of the rumoured new multiplayer features in Call of Duty: Ghosts is the ability for players to now slide (yes, you read that correctly – we did say slide!) across the map while sprinting. Now whether or not this will be overly powerful is yet to be established, but if it does get put into the game, it might be a good idea for the developers to make it only possible to hip-fire spray and spread the crosshairs further apart than when you’re sprinting to level the playing field. Gamers will also be able to use the sprint-slide function to quickly gain access to cover and avoid gunfire.

Another new addition is the ability to roll out of harm’s way. So say you’re laying prone, having a peaceful snooze when suddenly a bullet hits you right in the foot. On any other Call of Duty game you’d have to get up and run away; with Ghosts, you can simply roll behind cover then continue to catch those forty winks. Oh man, how we love taking naps while there’s a war going on.

It’s being speculated that Ghosts will also grant players the ability to peek and lean around corners, which could be useful for a number of reasons. For example: say your best friend told you he was going to get a lovely MP7 from the shops, but you had your doubts. Normally if you’d follow him you wouldn’t be able to see if he was being truthful unless you completely showed yourself and thus leaving you exposed and vulnerable to attack. So now you’ll simply be able lean out of cover and see that your so-called best friend has actually bought a goddamned DSR! Man, we hate snipers.

Finally, it’s thought that Ghosts will make use of Activision’s brand new facial animation engine, unveiled at the Game Developers Conference back in March and demonstrated in the video below. We await official confirmation, however.
