Following the recent death of beloved actor and comedian Robin Williams, many players requested a tribute to him in Blizzard’s World of Warcraft MMORPG. Williams, an avid gamer, was known to be a fan of the series and the publishers assured users they were “taking care of it” following a successful online petition. It certainly appears Blizzard are planning to honour their word, as fresh speculation about the nature of the tribute has been fuelled this week by a new discovery: namely, assets found in the files of upcoming expansion Warlords of Draenor by the fan site Wowhead include several NPC models labelled ‘Robin the Entertainer’.
While many have pointed out that the djinn model, pictured right, is simply an existing enemy model from WoW: Cataclysm, it seems like too much of a coincidence not to be in some way related to Blizzard’s promised memorial. Given the cartoonish nature of the game, an Aladdin reference is arguably the most fitting way to honour the comedian, although among the other models labelled with the same designation is a suspiciously masculine-looking woman; some might say even Doubtfire-esque.
Is it possible that the game will incorporate a character for each of Williams’ most iconic roles? While that would be met with approval from many quarters, and looks like a realistic proposition, it is impossible to know for sure without further details. Barring an official statement from the creators, we will have to wait until Warlords of Draenor is released on November 13.
