During this morning’s Nintendo Direct, we got a look at the next wave in the Smash Bros. amiibo, as well as a brand new series of figures centered around Mario.
The freshly announced wave for Smash Bros. will include Robin, Lucina, Pac-Man, Wario, Ness, and Charizard. A “Spring 2015” release date was given for the figures.
Nintendo also announced a new series of amiibo, titled Super Mario. This wave includes Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, and Toad. All of these characters have been reworked from their original models in the Smash Bros. series, except for Toad, who is making his debut in the new Super Mario set. This new Toad figure will add amiibo functionality to Captain Toad’s Treasure Tracker, a Wii U game released last month. This particular series is slated for a March 20 launch.
Nintendo’s senior product marketing manager, Bill Trinen, explained that although the figures in different series won’t look the same, they will function the exact same way. He also unveiled a website that lists all amiibo compatibility.
One more wave of amiibo will hit stores before the two new sets become available. A previously announced wave in the Smash Bros. series includes 11 amiibo: King Dedede, Rosalina and Luma, Bowser, Sonic, Mega Man, Toon Link, Sheik, Ike, Shulk, Lucario and Meta Knight. These are set to launch sometime in February, though no specific date was given.
