Many fans who are jumping on the Nintendo train for the first time since the Gamecube will be ecstatic to hear that many of the Wii classic titles are coming to Wii U.
The announcement came during the today’s Nintendo Direct, which boasted multiple releases and announcements for both the 3DS and Wii U.
Arguably one of the greatest titles of the last generation – winning multiple 10/10 from sites such as GameSpot, IGN and GamesRadar – Super Mario Galaxy 2, is available today.
Furthermore, Punch Out!!! will weigh in on January 22 in North America; in Europe you can snatch Donkey Kong Country Returns, and the Metroid Prime Trilogy lands on January 29. These three titles will be available at the price of €19.99/£17.99 but will be cut to half price for the first week of each release.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata noted that due to the previous Wii U backwards compatibility, which required switching the hardware to Wii mode, the company were unable to redistribute Wii software for download on Wii U.
Iwata said the titles will now be available to launch directly from the Wii U menu. It was also announced that games compatible with the now rare Wii Classic Controller can also be played with the Wii U GamePad, so players won’t have to shell out for any additional hardware.
Further Wii games are planned to be released on the Wii U eShop, including Pandora’s Tower and Kirby’s Adventure, amongst others.
It’s a move by Nintendo that will give them a chance to capitalize on some of their extensive back catalogue.
