The blocky world of Minecraft is set to transform into Springfield, when The Simpsons hit the popular sandbox game next month.
Available exclusively on Xbox One and Xbox 360 from late February, The Simpsons content pack will provide players with skins for Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and little Maggie, as well as 19 extra Springfield Elementary School characters.
Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, said: “We have an active community of more than 17 million die-hard Minecrafters on Xbox Live enjoying the wide range of downloadable content on Xbox, and they have been clamoring for us to bring Simpsons characters to the game.”
“We are thrilled to partner with Twentieth Century Fox and Gracie Films to bring The Simpsons to life on Minecraft Xbox 360 and Xbox One editions. I can’t wait to see what the community creates.”
Twentieth Century Fox executive Roz Nowicki added: “Like The Simpsons, Minecraft is a true cultural phenomenon embraced by people of all ages, from every corner of the globe.
“We know fans of the show will have a ton of fun bringing the colorful characters of Springfield into the intricate worlds they’ve been building in Minecraft.”
Minecraft has quickly become a dominant force in video games, with a huge fan base of all ages and gender, as well as numerous product tie-ins including a range of LEGO releases and their own clothing range. It seems a perfect mix with the longest-running American prime time TV show which itself has lent its name to anything you can imagine.
The Simpsons content pack will be priced at $1.99, exclusively on Microsoft’s consoles, though an Xbox Wire post stated that fans should “stay tuned” for more information on a possible release of the DLC on other platforms.
