A free patch that adds amiibo functionality to Super Smash Bros. for 3DS will be available tomorrow, Nintendo has revealed today.
In an official PR email distributed to the media, the company confirmed that the update “will enable amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. Collection to be used with the new [3DS] systems.”
This update comes ahead of Friday’s release of the New 3DS XL, and sooner than largely expected. Nintendo’s latest iteration of its flagship handheld will add NFC functionality to be used with amiibo. Super Smash Bros. will be the first game on the 3DS to utilize amiibo support, with games such as Codename S.T.E.A.M. to follow soon.
For those who will not be upgrading to the New 3DS XL, Nintendo has promised an NFC peripheral that will add the same functionality to the original console. That accessory is set to launch in Japan this summer, but no release information has yet been given for other regions.
