Naughty Dog: Uncharted’s Narrative Doesn’t Lend Itself to Open World Gameplay; ‘Wide-Linear’ Approach Instead

Despite open world games becoming increasingly popular as of late, Naughty Dog doesn’t see its Uncharted series following the likes of Metal Gear Solid V and making the leap any time soon.

During a Q&A session at EGX 2015 in Birmingham earlier today, the studio’s community strategist Arne Meyer was asked by an audience member whether the studio had at any point considered making the PlayStation-exclusive series a fully open-world adventure. Meyer responded:

“One of the things that we’re always focused on is that we want to tell a set story, and with a particular amount of pacing. So, if you introduce too much player choice, then players are going to go off and do the side missions and we’re not really pulling them through the story, and affecting the pace.”

That being said, he added that Naughty Dog is “trying to play with that a little bit” through the concept of “wide-linear” gameplay that has been showcased extensively in gameplay demos for the upcoming Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End:

“If you look at the Uncharted 4 and the demo from E3, where you’re going downhill in a jeep, there’s more than one path down there; we are trying to give you a little bit more choice. But, at the end of the day, it’s going to affect the pacing of the story, and that’s something that is of utmost importance to us.”

      MGSV isn’t truly open world anyway– it’s basically different areas connected by roads. But yeah, I agree– ‘wide-linear’ probably would have been a better strategy for MGSV
