Wii U Production Will End in 2016

UPDATE: Nintendo has issued the following statement regarding the announcement of the Wii U’s production coming to an end. They say that the statement was, “not an announcement from the company. . . [Nintendo] plans to continue production next fiscal year and beyond.”

According to Japanese newspaper Nikkei, production of Wii U consoles will cease by end of the 2016 calendar year. This shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone, and will pave the way for the release of Nintendo’s next, and mysterious, console, known as the Nintendo NX.

After a terrible launch and eventual mediocre sales, the Wii U has been on its last legs for some time. Despite being home to a handful of outstanding exclusive titles (Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros., Splatoon, and Super Mario Maker), the Wii U’s comparatively low technical capabilities, lack of third-party support, and truly awful Gamepad controller/tablet hybrid, have resulted in a less than stellar performance for the home console.

The Wii U will have been on shelves for just over four years by the end of 2016, which is a fairly short lifespan for a home console. However, there are still a few more games that will be released for Nintendo’s struggling machine, including Star Fox Zero and The Legend of Zelda Wii U (maybe). So for those looking to get their money’s worth before Nintendo halts production for good, there are still a few titles to look forward to.
