On Wednesday May 4th, which has been deemed Star Wars Day, fans of the epic galactic saga celebrated with some exciting news. Gamespot reports that Respawn Entertainment, the studio responsible for the mech shooter Titanfall, will be working with Electronic Arts to release the next Star Wars game.
While details on the new title are still forthcoming, it has been confirmed to be an “all-new third-person action adventure game set in the Star Wars universe.” Development will be headed up by God of War 3 director Stig Asmussen. EA Executive Vice President Patrick Söderlund expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying he was excited to see what will come from the combination of the Star Wars universe and Respawn’s “attention to gameplay.”
“Their obsession with making games that feel amazing has helped make Titanfall one of the most successful new game launches of this generation,” Söderlund comments.
Söderlund blogged about the announcement as well, stating that the new game will honor the legacy of the Star Wars franchise. He also apologized for not being able to give more details regarding the announcement.
“Now, I understand on the surface this might sound a bit dry,” Söderlund stated, “but developing a game within the ever-expanding Star Wars universe opens up so many paths for us to go down, and an unparalleled playground to design within. We have already planted the seeds by assembling a small, but incredibly talented team, ready for the amazing journey that lies ahead.” His entire blog can be read here.
Respawn’s last project, Titanfall, was a major success, selling well over 10 million copies since it’s March 2014 release, and wining over 60 awards at it’s E3 reveal the previous year. Titanfall 2 is set to be released sometime early next year, but no other details have been confirmed as of yet.
