Shovel Knight’s titular protagonist is set to guest star in the eagerly anticipated Yooka-Laylee, Playtonic Games has today confirmed.
During a developer session at EGX 2016, the team behind the upcoming throwback platformer showcased a trailer for the game’s colourful cast of characters, which to the surprise of attendees also confirmed the inclusion of Yacht Club Games’ mascot as a (presumably) non-playable character.
Despite Yooka being 3D and Shovel Knight featuring 8-bit graphics, the two titles have common ground, not least in their respective Kickstarter successes.
The crossover certainly made sense to Playtonic, who discussed the inclusion with Yacht Club over several Skype calls.
Playtonic director Gavin Price revealed the collaboration came about after discussions with Yooka-Laylee’s publisher Team 17 about the inclusion of a guest character into their universe. He described Shovel Knight as coming instantly to mind as “a really cool character, from a much-loved game”, created by a developer with similar values to the team at Playtonic. He also suggested that Shovel Knight was the leading candidate due to the fact his likeness would be able to appear across all platforms.
Game director Chris Sutherland added that Yacht Club Games were responsible for providing Shovel Knight’s gobbledygook voice samples for the game, in keeping with the dialogue used by the rest of the Yooka-Laylee cast.
When pressed on whether or not Playtonic may consider such crossovers in the future, Gavin Price stated that he wasn’t “closed to the idea”, but that any such collaborations would take place in a future game rather than Yooka-Laylee.
Yooka-Laylee, which is touted as a spiritual successor to N64 platformer Banjo-Kazooie, is scheduled to release in early 2017 for Xbox One, PC, PS4 and Wii U. Having played the game at EGX 2016, our hands-on preview should appear here at Power Up Gaming soon.
