With the highly anticipated launch of PlayStation VR merely hours away, it’s not just gaming developers vying for a piece of the virtual reality action.

California-based audio company Plantronics today confirmed that it had entered into a partnership with Sony to release the Plantronics RIG 4VR, the first officially licensed audio headset to be optimised for use with the PlayStation VR. It launches alongside the system tomorrow (October 13) worldwide.

In a press release, Peter Petrides, director of gaming for Australia and New Zealand at Plantronics, said: “Sound is an integral part of any truly immersive experience, and with this in mind we set out to design an audio headset which would complement the incredible 3D audio capabilities of PlayStation VR.”

The RIG 4VR promises to “heighten the user’s senses”, and help to deliver “incredibly immersive experiences”. At the same time, Plantronics state that users will be able to hear enough of their surroundings so as not to completely isolate them from the outside world.

The RIG 4VR comes with cables to interface with the DualShock 4 controller and PlayStation VR system, and features a flip-to-mute boom with a noise-cancelling microphone that can be attached to the headset to offer chat functionality in PS4 games. The headset also includes 40mm drivers paired with low-frequency resonators, which offer “enhanced bass, whilst maintaining accuracy of sounds”.

The RIG 4VR has an MSRP of $70 USD.
