Despite initial claims that it was a North American exclusive, Sonic Mania’s upcoming Collector’s Edition could be heading to the UK and Europe after all.
Last month, fans of Sega’s flagship franchise were treated to the unveiling of a delightfully retro special edition for the upcoming title. Featuring a statue of Sonic the Hedgehog stood proudly atop a Sega Genesis console, a collector’s card and special replica cartridge, all packaged in a deluxe Mega Drive-style box, the bundle drew acclaim and anticipation from around the world. There was a major catch, however, as Sega told Eurogamer that the limited edition set would only be available in North America.
Earlier today, however, the UK arm of online retailing giant Amazon listed the Sonic Mania: Collector’s Edition as being available to preorder for both the PS4 and Xbox One [cached links], with a retail price of £79.99. Several hours later, the listings were removed from the site completely, prompting speculation that someone at the site had broken an embargo of some kind, with an official announcement possibly due in the coming days.
Sonic Mania is being developed in celebration of the blue blur’s 25th anniversary, and promises to have the same look and feel of the games in the original Genesis trilogy. Featuring remixed levels from Sonic 1 through Sonic 3 & Knuckles, as well as a number of all-new worlds, Sonic Mania was described by Power Up Gaming as ‘a love letter to Sonic’s classic era‘ when we got hands-on with the game at EGX 2016 last month.
Long-time fan game community members Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley, along with PagodaWest Games, have been drafted in by Sega to develop the title, following the success of the former’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 mobile port.
Unlike their European counterparts, Sonic fans in North America won’t have to live in the hope of a forthcoming announcement, and can pre-order the collector’s edition of Sonic Mania now for $69.96 on PS4, PC or Xbox One.
