Social networking giant Facebook has today launched Instant Games, an initiative whereby players can play a selection of classic video games with their friends directly via the Messenger app or their online news feed.
Seminal retro titles including Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Arkanoid, Puzzle Bobble and Galaga are amongst the HTML5-driven service’s 17 launch titles, along with a number of modern ‘casual’ indie games including Words With Friends and Brickpop.
Users can initiate a game against their friends simply by clicking on the controller icon in either Messenger or the site’s desktop version. Instant Games on mobile is currently available in 30 countries for those with iOS and Android devices.
In a press release, a spokesman for Taito, publisher of Space Invaders and Arkanoid, said:
“Taito has brought its games to numerous platforms over the years. Now, with Instant Games, older players can relive the fun of the 70’s and 80’s, while newcomers can experience the charm and challenge of Space Invaders and Arkanoid for the first time.
“Taito is dedicated to producing innovative, original games across all platforms, tailored to each platform’s inherit strengths. Be it smartphones, tablets, or something completely new, you can count on Taito to keep evolving, and continue entertaining gamers around the world.”
