Moments ago, Telltale Games confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets of this year’s Game Awards by unveiling its latest episodic series based on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

The title was first rumoured last month after a document uploaded amidst the SAG-AFTRA actors’ guild strike listed it as currently being in production at O’Farrell Enterprises, LLC, under the working title Blue Harvest. That company is registered under the name of Darragh O’Farrell, a producer for The Walking Dead and other Telltale games.

A number of commentators had also hinted that an announcement regarding the title was imminent, so anything other than an official announcement this evening would have come as a disappointment to Marvel fans.

Telltale showed off a trailer for the five-part series at the awards ceremony, which it stated is “coming soon”. In a subsequent press release, Telltale confirmed the first episode of the series will premiere in 2017.

The studio’s co-founder and CEO Kevin Bruner said: “The energizing blend of humor, emotion, teamwork, and full-on sci-fi action-adventure of the Guardians provides an enormously satisfying space to explore through Telltale’s unique style of interactive storytelling.

“In Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series, players will take on multiple roles within the ragtag band of heroes, and take the pilot’s seat in directing their escapades around the universe. We are always honored to be working with the best creative partners and storytellers in entertainment, and working with Marvel on this series leaves us excited to share what we’ve been developing when it premieres in 2017.”

Jay Ong, senior vice president of games and innovation at Marvel Entertainment, added: “With story at the core of everything that Marvel creates, who better to team with than master storytellers Telltale Games.

“Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series fully showcases Marvel and Telltale’s rich legacy of storytelling, and fans will find themselves immersed in an original, character-driven narrative. As part of our strategy to establish a new standard for Marvel games, this is certainly among the great titles to come.”
