Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare sales in November were down 51 percent year-on-year compared to the release of Black Ops III, market research firm the NPD Group has today confirmed.

The news comes via a press release issued by financial services company Cowen Group, who cited the firm’s November figures in its report, which also informed investors the franchise’s sales were 17 percent below their initial estimations.

The full data from NPD itself is not yet available, as it is believed the company attached a strict confidentiality clause to its November report – following widespread second-hand reporting of its October figures.

In response to the news, analyst at marker research firm Niko Partners, Daniel Ahmad, said on Twitter: “Call of Duty saw a very huge decline in the US… [it’s] not great at all for the franchise.

“This issue is that other games didn’t really make up for the decline. So the whole industry was down because of this. I think that’s what a lot of people miss. This isn’t a ‘good’ thing as some people have already said when overall spend is down.”

However, he added: “It’s important to keep in mind that the numbers below do not account for digital sales, nor digital purchases in game through the lifecycle.”

    Having played every COD on PS3 and PS4 for the last 10 years, the franchise needs to re-invent itself again and get away from a sci-fi setting. Black Ops 3 was actually a fantastic game, one of the best CODs of recent years, but Infinite Warfare is just more of the same, still a good game though. But I find myself playing the MW remastered multiplayer more than the IW multiplayer. In the UK the hype for this game was no way near Black Ops 3 or Battlefield 1. Battlefield 1 succeeded in sales because of a different grounded WW1 setting, so COD should return to its roots by making by making World at War 2 or Modern Warfare 4. But it needs to desperately bring a new generation of younger fans, I’m a COD veteran, but I’m in my late 30s and getting older now… It’s strange that although console sales and PC gaming is booming, it seems to me that young kids now just play crappy throwaway games on mobile.

    The moment CoD started dying was when they decided to add Pay-to-Win elements into the game. Supply drops with weapons went too far. Offering to purchase supply drops was the beginning of the end. I understand they wanted secondary forms of revenue but this isn’t a free to play game here. You’re charging money for this game and you’re implement schemes to ask for even more money!??

    C’mon Activision. Don’t flush a good game down the toilet.
