Update: A Twitter account purportedly belonging to ‘hacking’ group Lizard Squad has claimed responsibility for taking both services offline:
We warned you. Don’t be surprised. PSN and Xbox Live will be down for the entire night. #LizardSquad

Original: As 2016 draws to a close, users across the world are reporting that the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live online services are currently down.
It is unclear as to the exact nature and duration of the outages at the moment, and whether or not they are part of a co-ordinated attack, but users from North America, Europe and Australasia are all taking to social media to express their disappointment at the unscheduled downtime.
For its part, Sony’s network status page currently reports no issues with the PSN; similarly, Microsoft is reporting that all services are online.
It’s clear from the flood of social media posts on Twitter, Facebook and Reddit however that something is clearly awry, and users may be disappointed to learn that they may not be able to hail the arrival of the new year by teaming up on their online multiplayer titles.
Call of Duty’s network issues page is currently reporting: “Online services are degraded. Users in some regions may experience connectivity issues.”
