It looks like a remastered version of Sega’s critically acclaimed Dreamcast title Shenmue may finally be in the works, after the company’s European arm registered the ‘shenmuehd.com’ domain name.
The TLD registration was originally filed back in September, but has only come to light today after being spotted by Sega fansite TSSZ.
In May 2016, Sega confirmed it was ‘investigating’ creating an official remastered version of Shenmue I and II; it also hired Kid Nocon, a Korean programmer who worked on a fan-made HD makeover for the original title, to serve as a developer on the upcoming Shenmue III.
Before you get too carried away, however, the domain in question currently returns a blank page, so Sega’s plans for the website – and any associated game – remain subject to speculation for the time being.
Shenmue III is scheduled to release in December 2017 for PC and PS4. The long-awaited sequel was green lighted after series creator Yu Suzuki succeeded in raising over $6 million for the project on crowdfunding website Kickstarter in July 2015.
