The PlayStation VR version of Resident Evil 7 is ‘a level above’ the TV experience in terms of scariness, according to its lead VR engineer.

Speaking to the Official PlayStation Magazine UK, Capcom’s Kazuhiro Takahara explained: “Normally when we make a game we get a bit numb to the scariness, but even when we know where the enemies are going to come from, when I put PSVR on it’s still scary every time. It’s a level above the TV experience.”

In the chat, the developer also highlighted the ways in which the studio had attempted to combat simulation sickness, which affects a significant percentage of virtual reality players. “We knew straight away that something felt off about it when you experience movement in VR, even when it felt fine on the screen,” Takahara said, explaining that Capcom slowed down the movement of the player in virtual reality mode in order to rebalance the survival horror title’s gameplay.

He added: “I think it’s a great way of controlling it. Just looking at what you want to aim at is such a direct way of inputting.”

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard officially releases for PS4, Xbox One and PC on January 24.
