Hearts of Iron IV Sells 500,000 Copies Worldwide

PC strategy games might be seen by many as a niche genre nowadays, but that isn’t stopping Paradox Development Studio’s momentum. Its World War II-themed Hearts of Iron IV just reached a milestone of 500,000 sold copies worldwide since last June.

To celebrate, the game’s price has been reduced by 33 percent on the official Paradox Store. The game can also be nabbed on Steam, albeit at full price.

Even within the turn-based strategy genre, games can still attract large following, says Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. All it takes, he says, is a dedication to “quality, variety and learning from both previous experiences and the community at large.”

It’s hardly the developer’s first success, following the likes of Stellaris, Euorpa Universalis IV and Crusader Kings II. And now that Heart of Iron IV has seen the release of its first expansion, Together for Victory, although to middling reviews, the developer promises more to come.

Lead designer Dan Lind expressed optimism over Paradox’s commitment to tweaking the game going forward:

“As a result of this success we are able to take advantage of extra time to add tweaks and polish to the game. Our community has high standards, and we will work hard to to live up to their expectations in the coming weeks and months. We really want HoI to be the best it can be for our fans.”
