Working at NetherRealm Studios ‘Physically Draining’

NetherRealm Studios

NetherRealm Studios is well-known for the Mortal Kombat series and while we appreciate the game, we rarely acknowledge the hard work that goes into making these games. Some employees at the studio came forward and talked about the hostile work environment at NetherRealm Studios.

They mentioned that working at the studio is physically draining and that they did not have any time for themselves. All they did was work, go home, sleep and come back to work the next day. A former NetherRealm Studios’ employee mentioned that he was working on Saturdays and Sundays and would work for around 115 hours a week.

Another employee talked about how it was emotionally and physically draining to work at the studio. The following is what he had to say in this regard:

It’s physically draining. You feel like you wake up, go to work, go home and sleep. There’s no time for family, no time for friends or socializing or any work at home. It’s just work. That’s what you do for that portion of your life. And it feels shitty. You feel bad after you do it, physically and emotionally.

While the studio might be well-known for crunch culture, these are pretty harsh conditions to be working in. People need to balance work and private life and you can’t really do that when you are at work for 100 hours in a week. All you can do at that point is to go home and get some sleep while you still have the time. I can only imagine how hard it must have been for these people.

Isaac Torres, a former QA tester at NetherRealm Studios mentioned that he had no life for months and all he did was work. He talked about how he would come to work in the morning and would leave for home after midnight. The following is what he had to say in this regard:

I was tired all the time. It took me about 30-45 mins to get home since I had to take a bus. But I know someone who stayed on the couch in the office to not risk falling asleep while driving. I literally had no life for several months. There just wasn’t time. I would get to work at 9 or 10 am. I would leave at 2-3 am. And then that process would mostly repeat itself. Honestly, I have no clue how I did it. I’m pretty sure I aged 20 years in the span of three months.

Other companies have been under a lot of heat as well. Riot Games is accused of not taking action for sexual discrimination and harassment in the company. The company made several promised but has not done anything to make the work environment any better. Employees have decided to walk out even though the company has issued an official statement in light of the current issues.

NetherRealm Studios has also responded to these allegations and the following is what the company had to say in this regard:

At NetherRealm Studios, we greatly appreciate and respect all of our employees and prioritize creating a positive work experience. As an equal opportunity employer, we encourage diversity and constantly take steps to reduce crunch time for our employees. We are actively looking into all allegations, as we take these matters very seriously and are always working to improve our company environment. There are confidential ways for employees to raise any concerns or issues.
