“Stadia Pro Is Not Netflix” Says Google

Google Stadia Pro

In a recent Reddit AMA, Google Stadia director of product Andrey Doronichev answered certain questions that people had about the upcoming platform. He mentioned that Google Stadia Pro is more like Xbox Live rather than Netflix. He talked about various topics including achievements, modding, crossplay, free games and more.

Google Stadia Pro is called the Netflix for gaming but Doronichev mentioned that is not the case. He mentioned that there will be no achievements at launch but the feature will be added down the line. He also mentioned that mods will not be supported at launch either and that is a solution that is being left up to the developers of the games.

Google Stadia Pro subscribers will get one free game a month starting with Destiny 2. Here is what he had to say regarding the matter:

To be clear, Stadia Pro is not Netflix for Games like some people have mentioned, a closer comparison would be like Xbox Live Gold or Playstation Plus. The Pro subscribers get 4K/HDR streaming, 5.1 sound, exclusive discounts and access to some free games.

He also mentioned that users can unsubscribe any time they want and when they do so they will regain access to the free games that they got. They will not get the free games that were offered when they were unsubscribed to the service. So that is something that you should keep in mind if you are interested in getting the service.

Family sharing will be added in early 2020 and uncommon resolutions will also be supported but right now Google is focusing on 720p, 1080p and 4K. So you can expect to see 1440p support later on at some point. Google is trying to get the service up and running on all devices and the service will be available on Android and iOS in 2020.

These are interesting times. Cloud gaming is becoming a reality with Google Stadia and Project xCloud around the corner. This introduces a new dimension of competition for upcoming hardware such as the PS5, Xbox Scarlett and the rumored Nintendo Switch Pro. Not to mention the current Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite.
