The first Path of Exile was released in 2013 and offered hack and slash loot hoarders a darker alternative to Diablo 3. Although a little rough around the edges PoE took a lot of inspiration from Diablo 2 and although considered a ‘Diablo clone’ by some, it wore its inspiration on its sleeve.
While the series is far from the global gaming juggernaut Diablo is (with the might of Blizzard behind it), the series has attracted a loyal and vocal group of fans. Many gamers, us included, enjoy both franchises and welcome any new editions to either series.
Hot on the heels of the Diablo 4 reveal, Grinding Gear Games announced a sequel, Path Of Exile 2. But now the creators are looking to throw down the gauntlet to Blizzard. Chris Wilson, one of the game’s creators said in an interview with Gamespot, “Yeah,” When asked if they want to go toe-to-toe with Diablo.
“Path of Exile 2 is one of the next-generation of action role-playing games, and we feel it’s well-positioned there.”(with Diablo)
He went on to say, “Any company with a lot of money can make really nice graphics and so on. They have amazing graphics as well and a great storyline and so on,” Wilson said of Blizzard and Diablo IV. “But what we have here is bringing across six or seven years of content including all the balance and ecosystem. If you make a new game, maybe it’s bad? You don’t know until you play it. Whereas we know Path of Exile is good, and there are a lot of people out there who like that.”
Path of Exile 2 looks set to be released on PC, PS5 and Xbox Scarlet when it releases. So far no release window has been announced.
