Through the Darkest of Times is a resistance strategy game that puts players in the shoes of resistance fighters. The combination of strategic gameplay choices and a historical setting that is scarily real will make you feel extremely unsettled, but that just shows how effective the game’s setting is. Story
Times are terrible in Through the Darkest of Times. Patrolling National Socialists are on the look out for anyone who opposes their agenda, and the things they’ll do to those they find are unspeakable. As someone who does oppose this German regime, your life is on the line on a daily basis, no matter how small the actions you make are. Players take on the role of a secret group of resistance fighters in 1933 who have convinced their friends and family to join them and work against the regime.
Specifically, players are the leader of this ragtag group of resistance fighters, made up of ordinary people such as Jews, Catholics, Communists and Patriots, people who can’t just stand by any longer. The game will see all the resistance fighters make small efforts to hit back against the Nazis, though because this is a historically accurate game they won’t be able to prevent their atrocities.
Gameplay
Through four chapters players will explore the resistance group’s fight for freedom living under the 3rd Reich. Planning activities, finding people to help, and avoiding anyone getting caught are all ate the heart of the gameplay here. Players will be the ones making the decisions that could see their resistance fighters caught and thrown into captivity until the end of the war, which they may not live to see.
The game is portrayed in a beautifully art style that really adds a lot of character to it. The way the characters have been designed, as well as how they move, really helps immerse you in the era. Despite their appearance, these characters are ones that players will really invest in, mostly because of the emotional weight attached to them and the choices affecting them.
