You Know You Want Arthur Morgan To Suffer From Hypothermia

A new mod for Red Dead Redemption 2 has been gaining interest with the community, one that adds to the game’s survival elements. Hypotermod is the name of this mod, and it brings the very real threat of hypothermia to the frontier, where players can accidentally see Arthur Morgan suffer and even die as a result. The mod is available on Nexuxmods, and is fully customisable for those who want to make the survival aspects of it just a little lighter.

Is This Necessary?

Red Dead Redemption 2 has a lot going on without the risk of hypothermia creeping in, but yes I think this mod is entirely necessary. Well, I think it’s needed once you’ve finished the game’s story, and you want a bigger challenge from the experience to keep it going. Single player games like this can be all too easy without the risk of the environment killing the player, which would definitely happen in the setting of Red Dead Redemption 2. As far as I’m concerned, this mod just restores a feature that should have been in the game from the very beginning.

How Does It Work?

The base settings for Hyotermod revolve around Arthur Morgan’s internal body temperature, which becomes visible in the game. If this drops too low, the hypothermia will begin to set in, as it does in real life. The temperatures and severities are as follows.

  • Body temperature of 37°C – 35°C results in no hypothermia
  • Body temperature of 35°C – 32.2°C results in light hypothermia
  • Body temperature of 32.2°C – 28°C results in medium hypothermia
  • Body temperature of 28°C – 26°C results in severe hypothermia
  • Body temperature of 26°C results in sudden death

With no hypothermia there is no affect on the gameplay, Arthur Morgan will continue on as he normally does. With light hypothermia, a message will popup in-game to tell players that Arthur feels cold. With medium hypothermia players will notice that Arthur dismounts his horse every 30 seconds as a result of him not being able to think straight, becoming convinced that he is too warm, and needing to stretch his legs constantly. With severe hypothermia Arthur will fall over sometimes, freezing in a collapsed state on the floor for a little while before being able to get back up.

Of course you know that sudden death means sudden death, and that’s the real threat here. Players who push Arthur to travel through the snow and cold at night will find themselves fighting a foe they’ve never come up against before, and it’s going to completely change how they play certain parts of the game. Wind speed and being wet will also affect the hypothermia ratings, so really the mod plays into most of the game, causing serious repercussions if players don’t pay attention to the environment.

I’d love to see more people using a hardcore survival mod like this, please let me know if you do in the comments.
