The news seems to be mostly bleak right now. In the UK it’s either about how much money you can claim because your livelihood is in ruins, or the most-recent deathtoll for the coronavirus (COVID-19). We’re trying to change that a little bit by putting some good news in front of your eyes every now and then, starting today!
If you hadn’t already heard, Plague Inc is a fantastic little game that allows you to take on the role of a virus or disease. You control the symptoms, the spread, and the lethality of your bug, and your goal is to take over the world by killing all humans. Humanity will eventually identify you and try to develop a cure, but if you’re been smart then you’ll be able to wipe everyone out long before that happens.
As the coronavirus began to take Wuhan by force, the game topped app store download charts, and became one of the most played games in the world before it was removed. People were obviously trying to use the game to simulate just how bad things could get, but this is a game, not a simulation. The game is still incredibly popular, and has earned a lot of revenue on that merit alone, regardless of any boost that the current pandemic has given it.
With that said, the developers, Ndemic Creations, obviously feel that they need to help fight against COVID-19, and they’ve clearly been given the funds to do so. Which is why the company has donated $250,000 between the Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, and the World Health Organisation’s COVID-19 solidarity Response Fund. In a recent post on their website, James Vaughan, the creator of Plague Inc, wrote the following.
“Eight years ago, I never imagined the real world would come to resemble a game of Plague Inc. or that so many players would be using Plague Inc. to help them get through an actual pandemic. We are proud to be able to help support the vital work of the WHO and CEPI as they work towards finding a vaccine for COVID-19.”
Dr. Richard Hatchett, CEO of Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness Innovations said ,”We are delighted that Ndemic Creations have so generously contributed to our crucial vaccine development work, especially as we tackle the unprecedented challenge of COVID-19. Games have an important role in raising awareness of the challenges the world is currently facing. Only through a concerted, global response—with the private sector working together with Governments and philanthropies, pooling resources and expertise—can we hope to stop such emerging epidemic threats.”
The President and CEO of the UN Foundation stated, “In this unprecedented pandemic with unprecedented needs, global cooperation is more important than ever. I am so thankful to Ndemic Creations’ contribution to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund. Their donation will support the World Health Organization’s lifesaving work.”
New Game Mode
If that wasn’t enough, there’s a new game mode coming to Plague Inc too. This mode is the antithesis of what is happening in the game, and in the world right now. Players will fight against a deadly virus, infection, or disease. They’ll need to balance the running of healthcare systems and companies whilst also working to fight against the pandemic. It’s going to be tough and challenging, and I can’t wait to play it. The new mode will be free for all players, so pick up a copy of the game now to ensure you’re ready for it!
If a game developer, publisher, or creator can find it in their hearts to donate to any cause that will fight back against the current pandemic, then anyone can. There are some big businesses that are helping out by making ventilators or sanitising gel when they’d usually be earning money right now.
If you have any good news like this then please let us know about it, we’d love to share it with as many people as possible.
