Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Topped The UK’s Sales Charts

Last week Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition launched for Nintendo Switch. It’s the remake of the original game that launched for Nintendo Wii in 2010, at least in the west. It was later ported to the 3DS, where it looked worse, but finally we have a working version on the Switch, a console in its prime.

The game looks glorious, with fully reworked visuals, audio, and pretty much everything else. It has been met with praise from fans and critics alike, and it’s definitely living up to that Definitive Edition title with the amount of reworks that have gone into it. There’s even a brand new epilogue that tells a completely new story, set after that of the main game.

The game sold so well that it managed to bead Animal Crossing: New Horizons as the best-selling game for the week in the UK. The UK’s weekly sales chart only takes physical sales into account, but to sell more than the latest Animal Crossing game is incredibly impressive. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been at the top of the UK’s weekly sales chart for months now, fuelled by sales from those who have stayed indoors over lockdown.

Sales of the game were more than double that of the original Wii version, which is hardly surprising given the rise in the number of gamers since then, but they were also slightly below those of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. This is interesting, because that doesn’t necessarily mean that the sales are worse. Since 2017, more people have shown a preference for purchasing games through digital storefronts. With the current pandemic, and lockdowns and social distancing combined, it’s more than likely that most consumers opted for a digital purchase this time around as well.

Unfortunately, Nintendo don’t share their digital sales data unless they want to, so we don’t know the exact sales figures for the game at this point in time. It’s likely that by the end of the month, Nintendo will have shared some data on the game’s sales, which may show that it outsold the sequel as well as the original version.

If you own a Nintendo Switch, this is easily the biggest game that you could be playing. It contains potentially hundreds of hours of content, and a fantastic story to dig your teeth into as well.
