Starbreeze and Overkill have been struggling over the past year. They had to ask for some help from their government in order to avoid the descent into bankruptcy, and it seems like that has gone a long way towards saving them. Earlier this week the official Payday 2 Twitter account put out the following, very exciting tweet.

If you’re still not sure what is going on, this tweet confirms that Payday 3 is now officially in development, and it’s going to release at some point in the future. For the entirely of 2020 both the developer and publisher have been unsure as to whether this game would ever make it out of their doors. Now though, it looks like they’ve acquired enough finding to make it possible.
The Payday franchise is one of the smaller, but still well known, online shooter game series’. It puts players in the role of bank robbers, and tasks them with breaking into various locations, securing hostages, stealing as much as possible, and escaping before they’re caught or shot down. It’s a true heist game, and one that’s so good that I haven’t seen anything else come along to compete with it.
Payday 2 was a big game, and it came to every platform. However, with the companies responsible for it facing financial difficulty, some versions now sit unsupported, and may never see another update again. The game, and the developers, live on the add-on content. The more players that purchase the add-ons, the better the game can be as a result, but hard times have forced work to scale back.
This is why we’re now seeing a tweet about Payday 3. This game will be the new Payday title that should take the developer and publisher into the next generation of gaming. Hopefully it’s aiming to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and even the Nintendo Switch, as well as PC. Shooters have come a long way since Payday 2 launched, and I think that this sequel can really make it today, as long as it doesn’t stick too close to the standard formula. Part of what makes Payday 2 so good is that it’s a game like no other, where you’re doing something that most games don’t allow you to. Providing Payday 3 keeps that fantasy alive, it should succeed.
