Crimson Desert Looks Absolutely Bonkers

Last week during The Game Awards, Pearl Abyss’ new MMO Crimson Desert was revealed with a gameplay trailer. It’s a meaty video with a lot of content in it, and all of it looks nuts. This game is clearly designed for the latest technology, meaning PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and I think it’s going to smash records when it launches. It’s got the looks, and with the developer’s pedigree thanks to Black Desert Online, I also think that it’s going to be one of the best MMOs you can play over the coming years.

What we have here seems to be a continuation of the Black Desert Online series. I’m not sure that there will be any crossover at all in terms of content, but it definitely feels and sounds like there’s some sort of continuity between the two. It will be interesting to see what links there are when it launches, include any character-moving functionality. I’ve always loved that with Destiny 1 and 2 I could play as the same character, so doing the same here feels right.

This MMO doesn’t have any sort of release date yet, but I think it’ll be out around 2021. We wouldn’t be getting a gameplay video that looks this good if the game was still too early on in development. This is footage of an MMO that’s going to be ready to get into the hands of players, at least in beta form, later in 2021. Maybe even in exactly one year’s time. There currently isn’t much on the calendar that’s planned for then, and it’s not a time when developers or publishers generally put games out. If it’s free-to-play, I can’t think of a more perfect time.

We definitely need to be cautious while looking at this game though. Any game can look good in trailers, but it’s the content that we must judge. Still, I think that it’ll have what it takes. We’ve had so many bad MMOs over the years that there’s no way that a developer of one of the most populated can turn around and get things wrong in a sequel.
