You may have heard that Maneater is part of the PlayStation Plus lineup of free games for January 2021. What you might not know is that it’s the PS5 version of the game that all subscribers are getting. In my eyes, this is what makes it an essential download. This game is already pretty much the best shark-based one I’ve ever played. Pushing it to its limits on PS5 though, that’s going to be the ultimate shark-based experience for years to come. The game launched for PS4 earlier this year, and it did quite well when it initially launched on PC. Now though, I can see the game having a bit of a renaissance when a whole new generation of people discover it for the first time.
So what is Maneater? Well, it’s an open-world RPG in which you play as a shark from birth. You need to explore the world’s distinct zones and eat your way to the top of the food chain. Eventually, you can earn new mutations that will allow you to take on the toughest shark hunters out there. Once you have you can finally rid the world of all humans, and enjoy your paradise alone whilst eating everything in sight.
The game takes the traditional open-world RPG mechanics and gives them all a shark-based twist. Abilities are all focused on your shark abilities, such as armour, teeth, and specialised oceanic skills such as luminescence and electrical shocks. The abilities are pretty wild by the end of the game, and there’s a host of cosmetics that you can also pick up along the way to make the most of your time with the game.
If that doesn’t take your fancy, then play it purely for the collectibles. This is an open-world game like any other, meaning there’s a plethora of items to pick up and tasks to complete. I’ve spent quite a few hours in the game already, and I still haven’t scratched the surface of what’s on offer in terms of the world’s collectibles.
Finally, it’s just fun to be a shark that eats humans. This is a game that lets you do that as much as you want, and it never gets old. The gameplay is fantastic, and I can’t recommend it enough, especially since it’s free for the month.
