In this week’s Nintendo Direct, a very special game was revealed. While several special games were revealed, the one I’m talking about is one you might not immediately think of. In fact, it’s one that Nintendo seems to have been doing its best to ignore. I’m talking about Splatoon 3. In 2022 we can expect a third mainline entry into the ink-shooting series, and I couldn’t be happier about it. Though I am slightly confused about why Nintendo still doesn’t pay enough attention to Splatoon 2. Check out the reveal trailer below and read on for some more thoughts on this one.
Splatoon 3 will be the latest game in the series, and if Splatoon 2 has shown us anything, it’s how popular the game is with Switch players. This game still has a huge player base who play online games against one another every day. The thing is, all the live support it was getting has disappeared. Only in the last few months have we had any Splatfests, which are major events in the Splatoon universe. They draw in more players, offer unique rewards, and generally act as a great reason to return and play.
Nintendo hasn’t been doing themselves any favours with the series. I’d go as far as saying that they wanted it to die off. That’s because they’ve ignored in favour of other games. While those games might be more popular in Japan, where Nintendo has the best view of their demographic, the rest of us have different tastes. We want more Splatoon.
Finally, after what will be five years with just Splatoon 2, we’re getting a new game. My hope is that Nintendo has a better post-launch content plan with this one. With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, they’ve shown that they understand how to keep a community engaged and energised. All they need to do is have a similar content plan with Splatoon 3. It’ll be genuinely incredible to have a Switch-exclusive shooter that’s worth coming back to every week. Sure, Fortnite and Apex Legends are great, but you can play those anywhere. Us Switch fans want something that’s unique to Nintendo’s hybrid console again.
