What Could Haven Entertainment’s First Game Be?

Last week, Sony revealed that they’d invested full-game funding in Haven Entertainment. This is a brand new studio that has been founded by Jade Raymond. If you don’t know who that is, you probably know the games she’s worked on. To name a few, she helped the team who built the Assassin’s Creed franchise, she worked on Star Wars games for EA, and she lead the development team who put out Splinter Cell: Blacklist. She’s a bit of an industry legend. Most recently, she worked at Google Stadia, but obviously, she’s left her role there now to work with this new studio. Here’s the thing though, they could make literally anything.

Sony is investing in this studio’s first game because they want it to be a PlayStation exclusive. This means that the idea for the game must be pretty special indeed. Sony isn’t going to invest in just anything, because they want their first-party lineup to be incredible. Just look at the games we’ve got over the last few years. God of War, Days Gone, Death Stranding, and Marvel’s Spider-Man are just a few of the phenomenal titles that have defined PlayStation in recent memory. While some of these games have been polarizing, there’s no denying the level of finish and polish on the end products.

It’s hard to imagine what Haven Entertainment’s first game will look like. It probably won’t be as bonkers as Death Stranding, but the bar has been set for that level of conceptual gameplay, so who knows. I think that, given Jade Raymond’s pedigree and industry knowledge, this new IP will be something that hardcore and casual gamers alike can all get into. It’ll be a title that’s accessible for everyone, not just those who have a certain level of understanding when it comes to games.

Part of me wants to say that it’ll be an MMO. However, with the industry moving so fast now, I don’t think that’s true. It will definitely lean into games-as-a-service as a business model, but I think the experience on offer will be far more personal. This is going to be a game that people identify with, and it’s going to be great.
