Recent rumors suggest that the next Call of Duty, courtesy of Sledgehammer Games, will be set in an alternative World War 2. Specifically, the game’s setting is 1950, but World War 2 never ended as it did in our timeline, in 1945. This means that the war has been raging on for another five years, and things will be even more desperate than they got by 1945. This leak was reported by GamesRadar, but there’s actually a video from the true source which is well worth a watch if you have a moment. Take a look at it and read on for some more Speculation.
Okay, so Call of Duty: Vanguard is probably not the name. However, I do think that the game will lead on from Call of Duty: WW2. That’s because Sledgehammer Games also made that entry, so it just makes sense that they would continue on from their own property. After all, the last game in the franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, is an expansion of an older sub-franchise, and it sold incredibly well. With that in mind, there’s no real reason that this game couldn’t do just as well.
The thing about World War 2 is that it was brutal. By the end, everyone was done. To think that the war could have gone on for five more years is insane. If that’s what this game’s setting will be, then it’s going to show us a very bleak world. The Nazi war machine may even have made it as far as the UK, and be starting to make invasion attempts on the US. There are all kinds of technology that could be developed in this new space of war. Better tanks, weapons, and even some sort of espionage efforts that we’ve never heard of before.
There are books and games that tell a story around what could have happened if World War 2 never ended, but this one is simply extending it. I think that’s where it’ll make a real impact. It’s not telling a new version of a story we’ve seen before, it’s extending one that everyone wishes was a lot shorter.
