Horizon: Forbidden West Looks Fantastic

Last week, Sony gave us a good look at Horizon: Forbidden West. Outside of the first trailer for the game, this is the first real look that anyone has had at the sequel to Horizon: Zero Dawn. While there wasn’t much on show in the way of this mysterious red stuff, there was an awful lot of exploration, combat, and open-world gameplay to enjoy. I think it’s shaping up to be a worthy sequel, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it and play something this good-looking at some point this year. Sadly, there’s still no release date.

The two things I think that are worth noting in this video are the velociraptor-like machines and the raiders. These mountable dinosaurs look fantastic, and I think there’s going to be a great explanation for their existence within the game’s lore. Most machines had a purpose and reason for their design, and I reckon that these guys were built to protect the local wildlife. They’re vicious, but they can also be quite docile when avoided, so I think they’re the perfect candidate for keeping people away from forests and maintaining those forests as well.

The raiders are meatier than any other enemies we’ve faced in this world. They’re riding big mammoth-like machines, and they’ve been doing it for so long that they have structures built on them. I think this is telling of how the combat is going to change in this game. In the first one, we were facing off against massive machines, but they still had freedom of movement. In the sequel, we see how humans have adapted the machines to make them useful, and it’s slowed them down. Combat is going to require even more thought, because there’s the machine enemy to fight, which is pretty lethal anyway, plus the raiders.

I’ve got a lot of thoughts about this game, but ultimately I just think that it’s a worthy successor from Guerrilla Games. I’m even more pleased to see a title from one of my favourite developers getting so much attention, and I hope that continues long after this game releases.
