This week, I stumbled across something I really didn’t expect to see. While I’ve come across the odd Game Boy game on Kickstarter, I haven’t seen a Game Boy Advance game on there ever. While I admit I’ve probably missed a few, this is still pretty unprecedented, particularly when you consider that the game is launching twenty or so years after the console. I bet Nintendo never thought this would be a thing. The company usually discontinues a console and then it rises in value on the second-hand market. In 2021 though, we’re getting something that’s making it more relevant yet again.
Goodboy Galaxy is described by the developer as a cute version of Metroid. In essence, it’s a Metroidvania that just looks sweet and doesn’t fill you with dread like Metroid Dread will. The Kickstarter was seeking £18,000 to bring the game to life. At the time of writing, with 29 days to go, it’s currently at £88,000 and counting. I think it’s safe to say that they’ve generated enough to fund the enhanced versions of the game for PC and Switch. Personally, I’d love to be able to play this both on my Switch and my Game Boy Advance. Hopefully, that’s the case one day.
So far, all but one of the initial stretch goals has been hit. This means that there are co-op missions, a color comic, a new mission, and all we’re waiting on is £100,000 for the developers to release the engine and allow modding or for fans to build their own games. It’s truly phenomenal when a game takes off like this, and I absolutely love to see it. I’ve backed for the special edition Game Boy Advance pack. This gives you a proper boxed game cartridge with all the amazing stuff that entails. It means that I’ll be picking up a new boxed Game Boy Advance game in 2022, and that’s not something I ever thought would be possible. Nostalgia is powerful thing, and in this case I think it’s only serving to do good and help a passionate developer out. you can back the Kickstarter here if you like, there are no limits on the rewards that are on offer here.
