During last week’s PlayStation Showcase, we got a fantastic look at the upcoming Borderlands spin-off title Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. This game is perfect for any Borderlands fan for a number of reasons, though it might not seem like it at first. The game is primarily based on pen and paper Dungeons and Dragons games. It’s not all about traveling around the Borderlands brand of universe and shooting everything in sight. It’s actually about saving the world from dragons and evil through the use of awesome weapons and magic. That might sounds close to Borderlands, but it’s still quite different.
The crux of this game is that it’s the imaginary version of what’s going on in a pen and paper Dungeons and Dragons game. Tiny Tina is the Dungeon Master, and she’s making up the story and rules for you. It’s why the game is so different from Borderlands, but still shares a lot of similarities with it. Tiny Tina knows the world of Borderlands, she lives in it after all, so it informs her Dungeons and Dragons game, but it doesn’t define it. In fact, it makes it better in many ways because it doesn’t have to rely on some parts of reality.
The weapons in the game are all going to be based on melee weapons and things you’d use in Dungeons and Dragons. It works well because you have magical shields, axes, crossbows, and all of that sort of stuff. This is the most basic form of combat you can find, and yet in this game it’s all brought to the forefront and given a nice Borderlands twist. You’ll be finding new weapons in chests all over the world and earning them by killing the enemies you encounter.
I can’t wait to play this game because I think it’ll be better than Borderlands in every way. Dungeons and Dragons is so interesting because of the Dungeon Master, and Tiny Tina will be an incredible Dungeon Master. She’ll throw all sorts of nonsense our way and make us question why we even want to play. I can’t wait to get into it and lost my mind totally.
