Nintendo Sales Update: Amiibos Soar

Japanese gaming giant Nintendo has released their sales figures for 2014 in North America, some of which were quite strong.

On the Wii U front, hardware sales increased by 29% as Nintendo shipped roughly 1.66 million units. This puts the lifetime sales of the Wii U as of December 31, 2014 at 4.27 million in the States. Software sales increased dramatically in 2014, jumping by more than 75%. This puts lifetime software sales just past 30.68 million, with 15.45 million of those coming in 2014 alone. These software numbers only include physical retail sales, and not digital sales.

The 3DS had improved software sales as well, riding on the success of Smash Bros. and Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, which sold 2 million and 2.6 million respectively. These numbers include both physical and digital. No word was given on the number of 3DS consoles that were sold, though recent estimates put its lifetime sales at over 50 million units.

The company’s amiibo line of figures is also selling well, hitting, according to Nintendo, “nearly twice the sales of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U”. Given that Smash Bros for Wii U sold 1.3 million units physical and digital, amiibo sales should be sitting somewhere around 2.6 million in the US; all of those sales coming in roughly two months.
