Sony Rejects The Last Guardian Cancellation Reports

Sony has moved to deny reports that yesterday’s abandonment of its trademark for The Last Guardian is indicative of the long-awaited game being cancelled.

With the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s website confirming that the mark the company held for the game had not been renewed, it was believed that the protracted Team Ico-developed project was finally being shelved.

That’s not the case, however, according to a PR representative for Sony Computer Entertainment, who told numerous media outlets today that it “can confirm that The Last Guardian is still in development”. It seems that rather than Sony giving up on the title, the trademark cancellation was simply due to an administrative error.

Directed by Fumito Ueda, the man behind Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, the game was originally announced in 2009 for the PS3, but has suffered from a number of setbacks and a troubled developmental cycle. If and when the title eventually does arrive, it is expected to be a PS4 exclusive.
