Crystal Dynamics Clarifies Rise of the Tomb Raider’s Resolution: Cutscenes Not True 1080p

Rise of the Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics has today cleared up some confusion over the timed exclusive’s resolution and graphical fidelity on Xbox One.

Game director Brian Horton reached out to Power Up Gaming earlier today to clarify that cutscenes in the game will be rendered at 1440 x 1080, not the 900p we previously reported via gaming outlet Gamersyde. This rather unorthodox resolution offers an eight per cent resolution improvement over 900p, as well as limiting upscaling to the horizontal axis.

Meanwhile, Rise of the Tomb Raider’s gameplay is expected to run at a native 1080p, as confirmed by Horton back in July.

It is being suggested that the resolution has been reduced in the game’s cinematics in favour of allowing the developers to apply more complex graphical effects, highly detailed textures and shaders when showing close-ups of protagonist Lara Croft and other characters in the game.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is the sequel to the 2013 reboot of the iconic franchise, and is scheduled to release for Xbox One and Xbox 360 on November 10 in North America and November 13 in Europe. A PC version is expected in Q1 2016, followed by a PS4 port in Q4.
