Microsoft’s Project Spark Has Burnt Out

Project Spark, a game development tool built and maintained by Microsoft and Team Dakota, is no longer available for download from the Windows and Xbox Stores. First announced in 2013, the tool allowed users to create, share, and play their own, and each other’s, content. Those who already possess the software will still be able to do so until August 12 when all online services will be discontinued.

Last year, Microsoft Studios ended active development for Project Spark, and the team members working on the software moved on to other areas. “While this means there have been no layoffs at Microsoft, it also means it’s simply no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping Project Spark up and running,” says a post on the Project Spark forums.

Microsoft will be offering store credit to those who purchased retail copies of Project Spark as compensation.
