Tomb Raider protagonist Lara Croft is to be the first fictional character to be inducted into the Golden Joystick Awards Hall of Fame.
In her 20th anniversary year, Ms Croft will join the illustrious company of Warren Spector, Shigeru Miyamoto and the Call of Duty franchise when she is inducted into the annual awards’ virtual hall of fame next month.
In a press release, Dan Dawkins, global editor in chief of GamesRadar+, who are organising the awards ceremony, said: “Lara Croft is one of gaming’s most iconic characters, the figurehead of PlayStation’s explosion into mainstream culture in the mid ’90s and truly deserving of a place in the Hall of Fame.
“The past 20 years has seen Lara become a household name and one of the most inspiring and influential female characters ever. Most impressively, the character has evolved over the decades, with Lara’s recent, more realistic, reboot more closely aligned with modern gamer’s attitudes; allied to a game-design that continues to be best in class. We would like to congratulate all of the teams behind Lara over the past 20 years for their achievements.”
Earlier this month, Square Enix released the latest game in the critically acclaimed franchise, Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration for PS4. The collection includes the core game – which originally launched in 2015 as a timed Xbox One-exclusive – along with all-new content and all previously released downloadable content.
The ceremony for the 34th Golden Joystick Awards is set to take place on November 18 at the O2 Arena in London. Voting in 21 categories is now open to the public, while a limited number of tickets are available at £10 each.
