Can Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds Measure Up to Fallout?

Gamers are eagerly awaiting the October 25 release of The Outer Worlds. It’s on that date that the game will hit PCs, PS4, and Xbox One. The game’s developer, Obsidian, has confirmed that its all-new RPG is also set to hit Nintendo Switch at a later date.

Obsidian has been hard at work pitching The Outer Worlds as the successor to its 2010 big hit, Fallout: New Vegas, which may come as a surprise for those of you still feeling a little shortchanged from Fallout 76. Yet, The Outer Worlds promises sensational role-playing systems, a vast open world, and supremely fast FPS gameplay.

What else do we know about the much-anticipated game? Let’s take a look.

The Story Behind The Outer Worlds

The story starts like this: Your character was aboard a ship transporting humans to a new colony called Halcyon, a pair of planets right on the edge of the galaxy. But the ship got lost, which means you’ve spent the last 70 years in cryosleep. While that ought to be too long to actually survive, a scientist as somehow awakened you and needs your help saving the frozen travellers.

You have the choice to help out or turn the scientist over to the corporate authorities. In fact, the entire colony and everything it manages are owned by different corporations. Turning him in earns you a cash reward. If you’re feeling conniving, you can even play the scientist and corporations against one another.

If you prefer, you can just head off to discover right out the gate. The main story branches in several directions, offering a number of endings. The one you get all depends on your choices.

For the most part, you’ll be on the two planets. One planet is more populated, while the other is wilder and acts as home to a more aggressive form of alien life. You also have the chance to visit moons and space stations.

Can the Game Compare to Fallout: New Vegas?

With a lot of emphasis on choice, it’s easy enough to see that the Fallout influences are heavy. There’s even a time-slowdown mechanism that allows you to target your enemies. It’s essentially Fallout’s VATS system.

The Outer Worlds has a number of factions, or corporations, as we mentioned, that are at odds with one another so you can choose to antagonize or lend a helping hand. There are also companions you may recruit who will join you on your journey.

Fallout is critically acclaimed for its storytelling and accurate depiction of casino gaming. In fact, there are six locations where gambling is available and in each of these casinos, players can have fun playing a variety of casino games, including variants akin to Paddy Power blackjack. It’s a popular feature in Fallout, but to date, we haven’t heard any mention of casino games in The Outer Worlds.

Is The Outer Worlds for You?

The latest release from Obsidian is a science fiction first-person RPG with an emphasis on gunplay and conversational systems. It was set to draw Fallout comparisons from the get-go. Can it live up to Fallout? Only time will tell.
