Nira, the upcoming indie survival game from Baseline Games, has a sort of release date. The game was announced late last year, but no date for when you could play it was given. Now however, we know that we’ll be able to play Nira on April 24, 2020 when it launches on Steam Early Access.
Nira isn’t like a lot of other survival games. It has a procedurally generated massive open world to explore, gather resources in, and fight for survival in too. There’s lots of wildlife to be exploited, or tamed, and players can even ride some of the deer or horses that turn up every now and then. However, with helpful animals come some not so helpful ones, like zombies and skeletons that will hunt and kill you if you give them the chance.
Paramount to Nira’s gameplay is base-building and expanding that base. You need to build somewhere to survive the nights, place your weapons, and ultimately rest when you’re too tired from everything else. There’s a lot to the game, but the fast pace means that dying and starting again isn’t too much of a penalty. If you do die, you can jump back in and be at the level you were pretty quickly.
One of the most-impressive things I’ve seen of Nira so far are the vehicles that you can craft. They’re showcased in this trailer, and they’re very speedy. The boat looks like a particularly great way of sneaking around areas that are full of enemies in order to acquire some resources beyond them, but we won’t know if that’s the case until the game is out. The plane looks amazing to fly, but I think I’d crash it as soon as I got control of it.
The advantage of using Early Access on Steam is that Nira can build a community. That community will help with the development through feedback, which is the biggest advantage games in Early Access have over those that are released in full. This is definitely going to be a game to keep an eye on, since it’s probably going to develop into one of the more intriguing and individual survival games of 2020. We’ll keep you updated as we find out more about this great-looking game.
