A new mod for Far Cry 2, Far Cry 2: New Dunia, seems to completely remaster the game. It packs in remastered visuals, better audio, bug fixes, and even some improvements to the gameplay. You’ll be looking at brand new textures, a much improved lighting engine, better water physics, the lot. It’s as if the developers took the game, reworked it, and released it today. Really the mod does change a lot, even though it doesn’t necessarily look that good compared to games that are releasing today. However, you need to remember that this was one of the first big games to launch on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. As such, the fact that you can even see what you’re doing with this remaster mod is a feat in itself.
Far Cry 2 is one of those games that is just iconic. You need to play it, even if you don’t enjoy the Far Cry series as it is today. In this game you can see the DNA of what the Far Cry games would become, but it’s also massively ambitious. There are multiple characters to play as, multiple endings, and malaria to combat with throughout the entire campaign. In a way it’s very dated, but it’s also something that you just don’t see in games today.
To top things off, the gameplay has been hugely revamped. Enemies in the original game could be bullet sponges. In fact, they just were. You could throw a lot of damage at these guys, and just star in disbelief as they didn’t die after your third magazine. Now though, the game has a much more realistic approach to damage, with enemies going down far quicker. But as a result, you will do as well.
You can pick the mod up here. With so many big games on the horizon, it can be hard to remember that there’s a huge back catalogue of them that you should also be trying to get into as well. At one point, Far Cry 2 was the pinnacle for the FPS genre. It inspired so many games. It’s no wonder that a remaster mod has been made, because I don’t think we’ll be getting an official one ever.
