CD Projekt Just Needs To Keep Its Head Down

CD Projekt has released its financial results for the third quarter. While I sympathise with the company for seeing its GOG.com business heading downhill, there’s very little you can do about it when it’s a niche platform amongst a market of giants. However, one thing that the financial report also discussed was the upcoming releases of the current-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. In addition, the company has talked about the game coming from its newly acquired developer, a game that’s got no release date, concept, or anything that we can see as concrete. I’m a bit sick of hearing from CD Projekt at this point, and I think the company needs to keep quiet for a while.

I’m not saying this to be harsh, but CD Projekt did something that altered the industry as a whole. Cyberpunk 2077 is probably a good game, but most people don’t care because all it’s related to is the abysmal launch it had. There were bugs everywhere, and it was so bad that it’s now normal and expected for a game to be delayed. This is totally fine, because everyone knows that the end game will be better as a result of the delay. CD Projekt has addressed the issues time and again, but it’s never come across as sincere. I honestly just want the company to keep quiet, build a game that works well, release it, and then discuss it.

The issue with game developers at the moment is that they’re expected to talk about their games years ahead of them actually releasing. There’s nothing else like it, and it sets up lofty expectations that are almost always too high for the product to live up to. It’s strange, but this is where the industry is at right now. Since CD Projekt did such a number on the industry as a whole though, I feel that it’s only right that it keeps its head down and works hard on whatever is coming next. We don’t need teasers from financial reports, we need to see the game when the company is ready to show us. Never again do I expect to see such a problematic launch from this company, because if I do, I know it’s because it learned nothing from Cyberpunk 2077.
