Four-Way Bidding War Erupts Over Starcraft IP Rights

Asia Today reports that NCSoft, Nexon, Netmarble, and Krafton are locked in a fierce competition to secure the rights to Blizzard Entertainment’s iconic StarCraft franchise. The contract would include the rights to develop new games as well as global publishing rights for the Starcraft brand. The companies, which are the four largest gaming companies in South Korea, are reportedly pursuing the deal quite aggressively. Reportedly, some have even sent executives to Blizzard’s California headquarters to pitch their proposals.

NCSoft, renowned for its MMORPG expertise, is seen as a strong contender for an RPG-focused project. Nexon, with its cross-genre experience, has proposed innovative adaptations, while Netmarble aims to leverage its mobile gaming dominance. Krafton, the studio behind PUBG, is also reportedly exploring a new StarCraft title, though the company has not confirmed its involvement.

Industry analysts suggest the deal could significantly boost the winning company’s global standing. “Whoever secures the StarCraft IP gains instant access to a passionate audience and a proven brand,” said Lee Ji-hoon, a gaming market analyst. “But the pressure to honor its legacy will be immense.”

StarCraft is a franchise of unique significance to South Korea’s gaming market. Brood War, and later Starcraft 2, are often credited with shaping the country’s esports culture and digital entertainment industry. For gaming companies in South Korea, securing the rights to StarCraft presents more than just a business opportunity, but a chance to associate with and carry forward a gaming brand with historical and cultural importance in Korea.

The contract reportedly includes opportunities to expand the franchise into RPGs, shooters, and mobile adaptations. The outcome could reshape South Korea’s gaming landscape, reinforcing its influence in the global market. Blizzard has remained tight-lipped but is said to prioritize development capability, global reach, and marketing strength in selecting a partner. A decision is expected in the coming months.
