Square Enix’s long-running MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV, is getting a major new expansion called Evercold in 2027. After initially announcing it at the Final Fantasy XIV Fanfest event a few months ago, the publisher shared some additional details about the expansion over the weekend.

Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is going to take place in a new dimension called the Fourth, a realm whose inhabitants live primarily on magical airships due to ice covering most of its terrain. As part of the Godless Realms Saga story arc, Evercold will introduce various new locations to the world of Final Fantasy XIV. These include Hringhorni, the Realmship of Fire; Naglfar, the Realmship of Water; and the city of Fargarth. The expansion will also mark the debuts of the Bastion job class, the Auto Content Balancing System, and Character Action Skins.

Evercold is the Next Big Expansion for Final Fantasy XIV

Though these may not necessarily be canon to the expansion’s plot, Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold will contain not one, but two pieces of crossover content. The first of these is a Final Fantasy VII-themed 8-player raid series called Beyond the Lifestream. The second, meanwhile, is the Ghosts of Desire alliance raid series, which will be themed around the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime. Mad Max: Fury Road and Evangelion artist Mahiro Maeda will be involved in the creation of this crossover content.

Gamers interested in hopping onto Final Fantasy XIV with the release of Evercold may be wondering when exactly this expansion is going to come out. Well, the answer to this is somewhat complicated. Currently, Square Enix has yet to provide an exact release date for Evercold. It has simply stated that the expansion will come out sometime in January 2027.

Players on All Platforms Will Be Able to Play Evercold

As for what platforms Evercold will release on, that has been made a little bit clearer. The expansion will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Mac, and even Nintendo Switch 2. Final Fantasy XIV itself is currently playable on all of these platforms, sans the Switch 2. This brand-new Nintendo version of the game will come out on August 4, 2026, so just a few days from now.

Players on PlayStation 4 who are looking to purchase Evercold should be aware that support for Final Fantasy XIV will not last for much longer on this platform. According to Square Enix, the company will likely stop releasing updates for the PS4 version of Final Fantasy XIV after the launch of Patch 8.3, which is expected to come out approximately 2 years from now.

Evercold itself will still be available to PS4 owners, but it will almost certainly be the last major expansion ever released on the platform.
