SEGA Teases Multiple Sonic Projects in Unreal Engine

The 35th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog is turning out to be one of most important in the Blue Blur’s history. In a recent interview with Famitsu reflecting on the milestone collaboration, Shuji Utsumi, COO of SEGA, opened up about company’s ambitions for the future of the franchise.

SEGA confirmed that the blue blur’s cinematic journey is far from over. “With Sonic, a new movie is scheduled for release in North America in March 2027. Beyond that, various transmedia initiatives are currently in motion across multiple fronts,” revealed Utsumi. “We want to expand the Sonic game IP both digitally and physically while maintaining its core world—whether that’s through SEGA Store merchandise, brand collaborations, or even physical location setups.”

The partnership between SEGA and Epic Games extends beyond cosmetic skins in Fortnite. Sonic Racing Crossworld marked the first time the Sonic IP was built on Unreal Engine, paving the way for a deeper technical relationship between the game companiese. SEGA teased several unannounced projects built on Epic’s engine are currently in development behind closed doors. “To be continued on that front… well, I wonder how much I’m allowed to say! But we have multiple projects currently progressing on Unreal Engine,” Utsumi hinted. “Because of that foundation, we hope to continue building a broader collaboration with Epic Games.”

The overwhelming response to Fortnite’s latest season—where players collected over 1.5 billion rings in the first three days alone—has proven that fans are eager for high-quality crossover content. Epic Games wants to bring even more SEGA properties into their ecosystem, building on the recent additions from Persona and Shadow the Hedgehog.
