Ocarina Of Time Datamine Points To Possible Master Quest DLC

While examining the Nintendo Switch 2 release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, dataminer MrCheeze found entries marked “MQ” alongside Dodongo’s Cavern. That is enough to make long-time Zelda players sit up: MQ is the familiar shorthand for Master Quest, the tougher alternate version of Ocarina of Time that rearranged dungeons for GameCube and Nintendo 3DS players.

A handful of labels is not a roadmap, of course. Games often ship with abandoned systems, leftover names, and experiments that never become player-facing features. But the trail did not stop there.

Follow-up reporting from Nintendo Life and Nintendo Everything identified strings including HasMQ, IsMQModeExist, NewGameMQ and ReleaseMQ in the executable. Those names do not prove Nintendo has committed to anything, but they paint a more deliberate picture than a single stray label.

The more revealing claim came from OatmealDome. In a post about the files, OatmealDome said Master Quest appears to be gated by an ownership check for DLC, rather than set to arrive through an ordinary game update. The available data is incomplete, but the post says it already identifies a mirrored world and reworked dungeons, including an especially strange change involving cows inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly.

That is why this has travelled beyond the usual datamine curiosity. If the interpretation is right, the references do not merely suggest that Master Quest existed during development; they suggest a way Nintendo could deliver it to players.

Master Quest is more than a harder difficulty setting. Its dungeons alter puzzles, enemy placements and progression, giving veterans a reason to revisit familiar spaces with their mental map turned inside out. For players who knew the GameCube and 3DS editions, its absence from the Switch 2 version was conspicuous.

Nintendo has not announced Master Quest, paid DLC, a free update, or any post-launch plan.
