Shinji Mikami’s New Studio Is Working on ‘AAA Original IP’

We haven’t heard much from Shinji Mikami since he left Tango Gameworks in 2023 to start Unbound Games, but new information posted to his new company’s website reveals the former Resident Evil director is hard at work on a brand-new game for consoles and PC.

Specific details aren’t available yet, but we know from job listings that the new title will be powered by Unreal Engine 5. In an interview posted to the site, Mikami says the new game will be “a AAA title for high-end consumers”, admitting that it’s hard to do in Japan due to time and budget constraints.

“So, we’re aiming for AAA quality and AA content, which is why we’re creating a title that offers a rich gaming experience and allows you to be completely immersed in its world.”

The interview also provides some insight into the games development process at Unbound Games:

“To put it in a positive way, it’s a lively production style, a flexible development style. The programmers we work with have to be willing to put up with that all the way through, so we want people who enjoy that way of creating to join us.”

Mikami is best known for directing Resident Evil 4 and eclectic 3D brawler God Hand before leaving Capcom to found Tango Gameworks. He left Tango in 2023 shortly after the release of Hi-Fi Rush to start Unbound Games but has, until the latest update to the Unbound’s website, remained out of the spotlight.
