Pokemon Champions: Mega Evolutions Priority Guide

Pokemon Champions

Mega Evolution in Pokemon Champions functions as a powerful transformation, which can occur once per battle after using an evolution stone on your Pokemon. This guide will provide you with tips and tricks on how to prioritize and time your Mega Evolutions in the most effective way during combat.

Mega Evolution Priority and Turn Order

After assigning the appropriate Mega Stone from the Held Items menu, you can activate Mega Evolution only once per match, even if you have multiple Mega Pokemon on your team. That’s why priority and the order in which things resolve when both players choose to Mega Evolve on the same turn is so important.

Since Mega Evolution order is generally tied to the Pokemon’s Speed stat, higher Speed acts first. After Mega Evolution, the new Speed stat can influence subsequent turn order for moves. However, at release, when both sides Mega on the same turn, the order was often random rather than strictly Speed-based, which led to unpredictable outcomes in weather control or Ability activation. This made competitive play extremely frustrating, but fortunately it has been fixed to a certain degree, and here’s how it works:

  • Moves now have priority brackets between +5 and -7, where the higher brackets go first and are tied to Speed.
  • Mega Evolution itself is not a move and sits in its own pre-move phase before most attacks.
  • Speed control tools like Tailwind and Trick Room or priority moves like Fake Out and Extreme Speed still matter a lot for Megas.

Please, keep this in mind when approaching your Mega Evolution during combat, as it can save you not only time but actually win matchups.

When and How to Use Mega Evolution

Currently, the top-tier picks among Mega Pokemon in ranked play include Mega Gengar, Mega Delphox, Mega Greninja, Mega Floette, and strong weather setters like Mega Charizard Y and Mega Tyranitar. Here’s how to properly use these Pokemon during battles:

  • If you want to pose an immediate threat like Mega Gengar, then activate Mega Evolution right away on turn one.
  • If you’re looking to create a certain setup, then use Protect or other moves to clear the field before activating your Mega.
  • In mirror or counter matchups, you can actually predict your opponent’s Mega and time yours to win, relying on Speed.
  • Build teams around your Mega and pair fast Megas with priority supporters or Trick Room teams with slower tanks.
  • Note that Skill Swap strategies with Mega Starmie’s Huge Power can boost non-Mega partners massively.

The most important thing to add is that you shouldn’t waste Mega Evolution too early, especially if the opponent hasn’t committed anything to the battle yet. Keep it under your sleeve, unless your strategy involves fast aggression.
